After successfully certifying the first 15,536 carbon credits in 2024, Carbonsafe continues to expand the scope of its program and is now preparing for the next verification cycle, which will confirm the results from the new agricultural holdings participating in the project.
“The processing of data from the new farms has been completed, and we are now preparing the technical documentation for the upcoming audit mission,” said Chavdar Marinov, Executive Director of Carbonsafe.
“The verification will be carried out by the independent international auditor Earthood – the same organization that confirmed our first credits. We expect the mission to take place by the end of the year.”
Expanding Scale and Scientific Foundation
Over the past twelve months, the Carbonsafe program has achieved remarkable growth.
Today, it includes over 90 agricultural producers from various regions of Bulgaria, covering more than 400,000 decares of farmland.
Each farm undergoes geo-referenced soil sampling, laboratory analysis, and monitoring of changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) levels. The results from the latest reporting period demonstrate a strong capacity of soils to retain carbon, even under challenging climatic conditions such as the severe drought this past summer.
“The data confirm that our soils not only sequester carbon but also restore their structure and fertility,” added the Carbonsafe agronomy team.
A Methodology That Sets the Standard
Carbonsafe applies the only methodology in Bulgaria based entirely on direct measurement and laboratory verification of actual carbon sequestration.
Each stage – from soil sampling to credit calculation – is documented with a high degree of transparency and traceability in preparation for independent verification.
In this reporting period, nearly 30 farms are included, with an estimated 500,000 carbon credits expected to be verified.
Once the audit mission is completed and a verification report is issued, the projects will be submitted to the Balkan Carbon Credit Registry (BCCR) for the issuance of serial numbers and official registration of the credits. This registration ensures full transparency, traceability, and prevention of double counting.
Guaranteeing Trust and Long-Term Sustainability
After successful verification, 25% of the verified credits from each farm will be submitted for registration in the BCCR, while the remaining 75% will be placed in a “Guarantee Reserve Fund.”
This mechanism provides long-term security, preventing over-crediting and ensuring that every ton of reported carbon is real, measurable, and verifiable.
“Voluntary carbon markets are built on trust,” emphasizes Chavdar Marinov.
“We maintain that trust through strict scientific discipline and full verifiability of every result. Our goal is not just to sell carbon credits but to build a sustainable ecosystem where farmers benefit, and soils regenerate.”
With the upcoming verification, Carbonsafe strengthens its model as a sustainable, transparent, and scalable framework — not only for Bulgaria but for Europe as a whole.
It proves that innovative agriculture and climate responsibility can grow together, creating real value for both farmers and the environment.
