Subject: Update in the Project Design Document (PDD) of the CARBONSAFE CARBON FARMING PROJECT – NORTH REGION

As part of the ongoing validation process, the Project Design Document (PDD) have been updated to reflect revisions, clarifications, and improvements introduced in response to observations and findings raised by the independent Validation and Verification Body (VVB).

The documents published below represent the most recent versions available at this stage of the validation process. They are provided for transparency purposes and to inform stakeholders about the current status of project development and validation activities.

Please note that the validation process is still ongoing and the documents remain subject to further revisions until the validation is finalized. Final validated versions of the Project Design Documents, together with the Validation Report and any other relevant documentation, will be published upon completion of the validation process.

Carbonsafe remains committed to maintaining transparency throughout the project development and validation cycle and will continue to make relevant project information publicly available in accordance with applicable requirements and good practice.

Project Description

The project is developed and managed by Carbonsafe JSC, a company dedicated to advancing sustainable agriculture and climate solutions. They are implemented within the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, in the agricultural sector. The primary goal of the projects is the removal of carbon dioxide (СО2) from the atmosphere and its long-term storage in the form of soil organic carbon (SOC).

The project is launched in January 2023 with a 40-year crediting period (2023–2063), during which it’s activities will generate verified climate benefits and carbon credits associated with measurable increases in soil carbon stocks.

The project is a regional grouped project in which farms can gradually be enrolled over time, provided they meet predetermined eligibility criteria.

The aim of the project is to turn agricultural land into a reliable mechanism for soil carbon sequestration while simultaneously improving farm resilience. Farms can generate carbon credits through the implementation of regenerative practices. The approach is based on annual geo-referenced soil sampling at three depths (0–30 cm; 30–60 cm; 60–90 cm) from each registered field; laboratory analysis of the samples in an accredited facility; and the issuance of agronomic recommendations and individual management strategies.

Credits are issued ex-post only after the measured increases in soil organic carbon have been independently verified by an accredited third-party verification and validation body and registered in a public registry for full traceability. In this way, farmers not only contribute to reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) but also receive a direct financial incentive.

The project support the restoration of soil fertility, improved water retention, reduced erosion, gradual reduction in the need for synthetic fertilizers, enhanced biodiversity, and healthier ecosystems.

Farms become more resilient to climate change, while annual laboratory analyses and agronomic recommendations help each participant achieve optimal results. The initiative integrates climate, environmental, social, and economic benefits, offering a sustainable development model for agriculture and local communities.
