Large-Scale Carbon Farming Projects Launched in Bulgaria, Covering Northern and Southern Regions

Two large-scale carbon farming projects are being launched in Bulgaria, covering both Northern and Southern regions of the country. The initiative aims to transform agricultural land into a long-term mechanism for carbon capture and storage, while creating new income opportunities for farmers through carbon credits.

The projects focus on the implementation of regenerative agricultural practices that not only contribute to reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but also improve soil health, farm resilience, and overall economic performance.

With a 40-year crediting period (2023–2063), the initiative places strong emphasis on long-term results and their measurability. The approach includes annual soil sampling, laboratory analyses, and independent verification, ensuring a real and verifiable climate impact.

Each project is structured as a voluntary grouped initiative, allowing farmers from across the country who meet specific eligibility criteria to participate. Participation provides opportunities both for improving agronomic performance and generating additional value through carbon credits.

At the core of the projects lies an integrated approach combining science, agronomy, and technology. Through systematic data collection and analysis, tailored soil management strategies are developed, supporting long-term sustainability, resource optimization, and climate adaptation.

Project type: Agriculture sector, removal of greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂) from the atmosphere and sequestration as soil organic carbon (SOC)

Methodology: “Methodology for improving and accounting soil carbon sequestration in agriculture”

Standard: Balkan Carbon Credit Standard

Project registration (South): https://bccregistry.org/project/69

Project registration (North): https://bccregistry.org/project/68

Project Description

The projects are developed and managed by Carbonsafe JSC, a company dedicated to sustainable agriculture and climate solutions. They are implemented across Bulgaria on agricultural land.

The main objective is the removal of CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere and their long-term storage as soil organic carbon.

The projects started in January 2023 with a 40-year crediting period (2023–2063), generating verified climate benefits and carbon credits based on measurable increases in soil carbon stocks.

Each project is a regional grouped initiative open to registered farmers meeting specific eligibility criteria. Participation is voluntary and ongoing throughout the year.

Eligible participants must:

• be registered in the Trade Register or BULSTAT

• have a valid farmer registration card

• have legal rights to use agricultural land

Eligible farms include crop production and mixed farming systems.

Following approval, a 5-year contract is signed, with the possibility of extension.

Objectives and Expected Results

The projects aim to transform agricultural land into a reliable long-term carbon sink while improving productivity, resilience, and economic stability.

Regenerative practices contribute to:

• increased soil organic carbon

• improved soil structure and water retention

• reduced erosion

• lower dependency on synthetic fertilizers

• enhanced biodiversity

Measurement and Verification

The methodology includes annual georeferenced soil sampling at three depths (0–30 cm, 30–60 cm, 60–90 cm), laboratory analysis, and long-term monitoring.

Carbon credits are issued ex-post, only after independent third-party verification. Credits are registered in the Balkan Carbon Registry, ensuring transparency and traceability.

Farmers benefit both environmentally and financially through participation in the projects.
