Announcement of the commencement of the public consultation process for a Projects
Subject: Public Consultation for the Proposed CARBONSAFE CARBON FARMING PROJECT – SOUTH REGION and CARBONSAFE CARBON FARMING PROJECT – NORTH REGION
Carbonsafe JSC announces the commencement of the public consultation process for the proposed projects. The purpose of this consultation is to gather feedback from stakeholders, communities, and the public regarding the project’s environmental, social, and technical impacts.
Project Overview
- Project Name:
- CARBONSAFE CARBON FARMING PROJECT – SOUTH REGION
- CARBONSAFE CARBON FARMING PROJECT – NORTH REGION
- Project Developer: Carbonsafe JSC
- Location: Bulgaria
- Type of Project: Agriculture sector, carbon removal – sequestration of soil organic carbon (SOC)
- Total Area (if applicable): n/a
- Project Description:
The projects are developed and managed by Carbonsafe JSC, a company dedicated to advancing sustainable agriculture and climate solutions. They are implemented within the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, in the agricultural sector. The primary goal of the projects is the removal of carbon dioxide (СО2) from the atmosphere and its long-term storage in the form of soil organic carbon (SOC).
The projects were launched in January 2023 with a 40-year crediting period (2023–2063), during which their activities will generate verified climate benefits and carbon credits associated with measurable increases in soil carbon stocks.
Each of the two projects is a regional grouped project in which farms can gradually be enrolled over time, provided they meet predetermined eligibility criteria.
The aim of the projects is to turn agricultural land into a reliable mechanism for soil carbon sequestration while simultaneously improving farm resilience. Farms can generate carbon credits through the implementation of regenerative practices. The approach is based on annual geo-referenced soil sampling at three depths (0–30 cm; 30–60 cm; 60–90 cm) from each registered field; laboratory analysis of the samples in an accredited facility; and the issuance of agronomic recommendations and individual management strategies.
Credits are issued ex-post only after the measured increases in soil organic carbon have been independently verified by an accredited third-party verification and validation body and registered in a public registry for full traceability. In this way, farmers not only contribute to reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) but also receive a direct financial incentive.
The projects support the restoration of soil fertility, improved water retention, reduced erosion, gradual reduction in the need for synthetic fertilizers, enhanced biodiversity, and healthier ecosystems.
Farms become more resilient to climate change, while annual laboratory analyses and agronomic recommendations help each participant achieve optimal results. The initiative integrates climate, environmental, social, and economic benefits, offering a sustainable development model for agriculture and local communities.
